You’re going to love the difference.

THE FORMAT

The MDS Handi

The MDS Handi is the Marathon des Sables experienced as a team: one participant in a wheelchair, six teammates, and 70 km of the Moroccan Sahara to cover together, over three stages.

You experience the same adventure as the MDS 120 Morocco participants: the same bivouac, nights spent under Berber tents, and food self-sufficiency. What changes is the way you move forward. You pull, push, carry, and take turns, with every metre conquered together.

The participant in the wheelchair is never just a passenger: at each stage, the Special Stage gives them the opportunity to move forward independently, using their own arm strength.

3rd edition

WHAT'S NEW IN 2027

For its third edition, taking place from October 1 to 9, 2027, the MDS Handi is evolving:

  • A team of 7: one participant in a wheelchair and six teammates, up from four until now. More hands to take turns, more people to share the adventure.
  • 70 km with no detours: no more vehicle transfers. The team completes the entire course, from the first starting line to the final finish line.
  • Teams of at least 4 members: not quite seven yet? You can still take part with a smaller team, competing in the same ranking as the others.

The racing wheelchair, adapted bivouac facilities, and accessible shuttle services will continue to be provided by the organizers.

70 km

THE FORMAT

The total distance to be covered is approximately 70 km, spread over 3 stages.

Before the start, you’ll be able to test all the equipment at the bivouac and make any necessary adjustments.

This year, no sections are bypassed: you’ll cover the full 70 km (approximately 25 km, 20 km, then 25 km), with no vehicle transfers. Sand, rocky desert terrain, dry riverbeds: the landscape is constantly changing, and it’s up to the team to decide how to tackle each section.

Checkpoints are located along the route every 8 to 10 km, and each stage includes its own Special Stage.

These distances are estimates and may vary depending on the route for each edition.

ACCESSIBILITY

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

The participant in a wheelchair. The MDS Handi is open to wheelchair users who are able to propel their wheelchair using their upper limbs. The principle is simple: stay active throughout the stages, at your own pace, with your team supporting you.

The teammates. Up to six people: friends, family members, colleagues, or members of a club or association. Depending on the terrain, they take turns performing three roles (puller, pusher, and carrier). Each person carries their own backpack, water, and mandatory equipment. Pulling or pushing a wheelchair across 70 km of desert requires proper preparation.

Missing a few teammates? Teams can register with as few as four teammates. If you need more people, you can complete your team with other participants. Get in touch with us.

EQUIPMENT

ONE WHEELCHAIR PER TEAM

The organizers provide each team with an all-terrain racing wheelchair designed for ultra-trail use, fitted with puncture-proof wheels and everything needed to tackle every type of terrain:

  • Pulling: a harness and two front straps, plus two side straps.
  • Pushing: a push bar that allows several teammates to push together.
  • Carrying: carrying bars at the rear and handles at the front.

Each team also receives a team equipment kit for adjustments and minor repairs (wrenches, heavy-duty adhesive tape, cable ties, pump, inner tubes, tire levers, and puncture repair patches).

The day before the first stage, at the bivouac, the organizers will introduce you to the wheelchair. You’ll have the afternoon to test it and make any necessary adjustments.

The only thing you need to bring is your own seat cushion.

THE SPECIAL STAGE

EACH STAGE HAS ITS OWN SPECIAL STAGE

Just like in rally racing, each stage features a Special Stage: a 100- to 300-metre section along the main route that the wheelchair user completes independently, using their own arm strength.

The location, terrain, and profile change every day, and you discover the day’s Special Stage on site.

During the Special Stage, teammates move about 20 metres away while maintaining visual contact. No one pushes, and no one pulls.

Completing the section earns the team a bonus of 1 to 3 minutes, deducted from its overall ranking time. There is no partial bonus and no penalty if the participant stops before reaching the end.

The Special Stage is optional: each morning, you decide together whether or not to attempt it.
