Opera in the dunes

Each year, a timeless scene plays out on the evening of the marathon stage. Musicians from the Paris opera and a singer perform for those runners who have competed in the SULTAN MARATHON DES SABLES, who sit on the sand, their clothes spattered with the marks of the past six days crossing the desert, for what is a completely surreal recital in such a setting. This 30th edition will be no exception with a concert planned at the very heart of the bivouac, just before the prize-giving.

Honouring the last

Tradition has been respected. Serge Dubord and Patrick Mahu, two firemen from Essonne, won’t forget the welcome the bivouac had in store for them at the finish of the long leg. Warned of the imminent arrival of the last competitors, virtually all the runners made for the finish line to form a veritable guard of honour for the two men bringing up the rear of this leg nearly 36 hours after their start of the leg.

The bivouac postmen flat out

67,057 messages have been printed out and distributed during the 30th edition of the SULTAN MARATHON DES SABLES. A record! Each evening, the bivouac representatives are sent out into each of the tents to distribute the eagerly awaited mail and its precious words from family and friends.
